STATEMENT from Most Rev. Robert J. McManus, Bishop of Worcester, on the Appointment of the new Archbishop of Boston On behalf of the entire Diocese of Worcester, I offer prayers of gratitude today for the appointment by the Holy Father of Archbishop-elect Richard Henning as successor to Cardinal Sean O’Malley as the next Archbishop of Boston. Archbishop-elect Henning has demonstrated a strong commitment to the evangelizing mission of the Church, inviting people to know Christ’s love in their lives. I also want to thank Cardinal O’Malley for his many years of service to the Archdiocese of Boston and to us as our Metropolitan Archbishop. Since I began serving as the Fifth Bishop of Worcester 20 years ago, I have witnessed his pastoral zeal for the people of God, always modeling his life on that of the Good Shepherd. He has served the Church admirably as he dealt with many pastoral challenges including the sexual abuse crisis, the merging of parishes and moving and realigning the many agencies and ministries in the Archdiocese to better serve the church’s evangelizing mission, all while assisting the Holy Father and the Universal Church as a member of the Council of Cardinal Advisers in Rome. May God grant Cardinal O’Malley peace in his well-earned retirement.
